The Crawford School of Irish dance can trace its roots back to 1983 when it began in Utah as the McTeggart School of Irish Dance, under the direction of Maureen McTeggart Hall A.D.C.R.G. It is the oldest Irish dance school in the state of Utah and has been under the direction of Jill Polkinghorne Crawford, TCRG since 2002.
The Crawford School of Irish Dance has been certified by An Coimisiun le Rinci Gaelacha, the Dublin Commission of Irish Dance. Our director, Jill Crawford, has passed a rigorous examination administered by the Irish Dance Commission and has received the Scrudu Teastas Mhuinteora or TCRG certification. As such, students of the Crawford School are invited to participate in competitions called feisanna (fesh-ann-a), which are sanctioned by the Dublin Commission and held throughout North America. While these competitions offer dancers many opportunities for personal growth and development, whether or not to compete is a decision left up to our dancers and their families. Performing is also an integral part of our program and our dancers enjoy many opportunities to perform at various events around the state of Utah each year.
Many organizations can offer Irish dance classes, but most do not have the expertise to teach students anything but the most basic concepts. Only a certified school has the benefit of teachers who have spent many years studying Irish dance, and, as a result, are truly qualified to teach all levels of this dance form.
~MCTEGGART SCHOOL OF IRISH DANCE~
The McTeggart School of Irish Dance was established in 1939 in Cork, Ireland. Peg McTeggart, the first director, was the eldest of four sisters, all of them champion dancers. The school soon spread throughout the whole of County of Cork due to the efforts of younger sister Maureen McTeggart Hall. In 1958 Maureen and her family immigrated to the United States, bringing with them the art of Irish Dancing and introducing it to the Western Region of the United States.
